BOPPP Trial
Supported by King's College NHS Foundation Trust

BOPPP is now CLOSED to recruitment!

Welcome to the BOPPP Trial website – “Beta blockers Or Placebo for Primary Prophylaxis of oesophageal varices in cirrhosis (BOPPP). A triple blinded, multi-centre, clinical- and cost-effectiveness randomised controlled trial.”

Funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme, the BOPPP trial aims to test if early use of a common beta-blocker is a cost-effective treatment to prevent bleeding in patients with liver cirrhosis and small blood vessels in the gullet.

Sponsored by King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH) at Denmark Hill, the BOPPP Trial will take place over 6 years and will recruit 740 patients from over 55 Hospitals, with at least 3 years follow up. A more detailed study summary is downloadable here [PDF of trial summary].

The target of 740 participants was surpassed and recruitment ended in July 2024 with 763 participants recruited to the trial.
